Here it is! The first ever Scenes & Stories blog post!
Scenes & Stories is a company in the making which, once launched, will offer styled collections of furniture, props and decorations available for hire for events and shoots as well as event management services.
Seven years as a wedding and party planner (that’s more than 100 amazing events under my belt!), a stint in Dubai surrounded by beautiful interiors and a lot of soul searching has led me to focus on “something new” and pour my energy and creativity into launching Scenes & Stories.
In June 2014, having landed back in the UK after almost two years of working in Dubai and travelling for work, I decided to take some time to decide on my next move. I missed events but I wasn’t sure on going back to them exclusively. I surrounded myself with lots of good advice including the services of a brilliant coach, Sonia from www.happy-mondays.com. Lots of questioning, some pretty clever exercises and in-depth conversations, revealed that I needed two things:
- To start my own business and build a project from the ground up. Now at that stage, I had NO idea what that business would be!
- To inject more creativity into my career and no longer ignore the blatantly obvious fact that I love hunting for amazing pieces of furniture and décor, be they vintage, handmade or re-made.
That is when the really hard work began of brainstorming and focusing on what this new business might look like. It morphed into a few shapes, sizes and directions before the inspiration for Scenes & Stories came. I didn’t want to leave events behind completely and it felt like my experience and knowledge of the industry would be a great place to start. I thought about the aspects of planning an event that can be challenging. I thought about all those great places one can hire furniture and props for events. And then I thought…If you are planning a marvellous, once in a lifetime event, scrolling through Pinterest, frantically pinning inspiration images to boards, and if you have decided, for one reason or another not to hire a planner; then where do you start to bring those inspiration images to life. Knowing where to look for the right pieces to create the ambiance you are aiming for can be mind boggling. Scrolling through a suppliers catalogue, looking at all the great pieces and not knowing which items go together, how to create the look and feel you are aiming for or event knowing what to call your vision.
That is when Scenes & Stories became obvious… providing customers a place where they can find fabulous pieces of furniture, props and decorations grouped into styled collections that look great together and serve a purpose.
My vision has grown since the initial idea and I have been busy focusing on sourcing the pieces that will make up the collections, discovering and collaborating with creative souls who help bring tired pieces back to life and create new items from scratch.
There is also all the nitty gritty of starting a business, writing a business plan, finding funding, knowing which aspect to focus on and when, and just generally not letting myself be overwhelmed by the size of my To Do list.
This blog is the first step in the online life of Scenes & Stories. It will be a place to document my journey as I move closer to launch day and it will also allow me to share great ideas and tips and my experience when it comes to planning fabulous events.
I will be posting sneak peaks of our collection, telling you about the great people I am working with and sometimes asking for your advice on which direction to take on a particular subject.
